Alessandra's new underground, based in the subterranean chambers of Jade Keep, faces increasing threats. The border forts are falling to the Toso, and Toszka fighters are arriving from overseas, hunting a man seeking refuge at one of Alessandra's shelters.
Up north, a young mire slave carrying messages escapes capture by another pair of Toszka fighters. She runs away, both from the her pursuers and from her owners, and crosses the path of Alessandra's team on the trail up to the passes.
As Alessandra receives new information about these two unexpected refugees and the men hunting them, she sees herself getting caught in the middle of something much greater than she can handle.
